Government Funded Paid Parental Leave – Change from 1 July 2023

Currently, the Federal Government offers Paid Parental Leave of 18 weeks to primary carers with a separate two-week paid initiative for partners called ‘Dad and Partner Pay’.

From 1 July 2023, these two entitlements will be combined allowing both partnered couples to claim up to 20 weeks paid parental leave between them. Parents who are single at the time of their claim can access the full 20 weeks.

The changes will provide more flexibility in terms of who can claim the paid parental leave entitlement. There will also changes regarding the timing of submitting claims and receiving payments. However, the government will also be introducing a $350,000 family income limit (indexed annually from 1 July 2024) for claiming paid parental leave pay.

More information will be provided over the coming weeks.
